In most cases, when an http request is attempted, the write event gets eaten and never triggers the handler to post the HTTP request. [Bug 4646] Cannot run binaries created with microsoft visual c++ 2005

I traced this down to the use of side-by- side assembliies in MFC (resulting in ActivateActCtx calls, which are not yet supported in Wine). It calls functions like AfxInitCommonControlsEx and AfxRegisterClass which then give no valid results. If I copy paste a bit of MFC source and hack this a bit I can get rid of these assertion (see attached test case. The dialog based applications then starts working, the MDI application still quits in the way I originally described, so this migth not be related at all???
