Bug ID: 56478
Summary: Requesting sub HD fullscreen resolutions breaks
applications/games on Apple Silicon
Product: Wine
Version: 9.5
Hardware: aarch64
OS: MacOS
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P2
Component: winemac.drv
Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
Reporter: ammoniak-molar-0r(a)icloud.com
Apple Silicon equipped Macs do not support "legacy" low (virtual?) display
resolutions anymore. Due to this several old Windows games running through wine
are broken, even though they run perfectly well otherwise.
Resolutions like 800x600px and lower are definitely effected, though I think
this applies to anything below 1024x768px.
A possible but undesired workaround is falling back the legacy X11 (XQuartz)
environment and its virtual desktop mode or using windows side tools which
enforce executables to run in windowed mode (like Dxwnd).
To my knowledge implementing something like the before mentioned virtual
desktop mode isn't feasible on macOS as child windows aren't supported.
Therefor I propose the solution, that the winemac.drv should ignore
wine/windows API "fullscreen calls", if the desired resolution is below
1024x768, when running on Apple Silicon. While this might break wine's
philosophy regarding windows function parity it would allow older software to
"just work" again without any manual workarounds.
An effected windows game would be "Colin McRae Rally 2005" which got a Demo
available. Further information, documentation and links regarding this issue
can be found here:

3DS Max 2024 wasn't launching without pasting bs.odis dlls to system32 folder,
all libs was in setup folder. After setting dll override setup launched but
could not finish installation. Figured out there's problem in main package,
3dsmax.msi, it wasn't launched either. I attached torrent file linked to my
package

The OBS has not enabled i586 builds for Fedora 40, so I created spec files to
do "new WoW64" builds. The wine-devel packages built fine, but the wine-staging
build failed with:
>
> [ 392s] dlls/combase/string.c: In function 'impl_from_HSTRING_BUFFER':
> [ 392s] include/winnt.h:888:46: error: initialization of 'const WCHAR (*)[1]' {aka 'const short unsigned int (*)[1]'} from incompatible pointer type 'HSTRING_BUFFER' {aka 'struct HSTRING_BUFFER__ *'} [-Wincompatible-pointer-types]
> [ 392s] 888 | const typeof(((type *)0)->field) *__ptr = (address); \
In Fedora 39, that's a warning, not an error, and the build succeeds.

Wine output
Wine cannot start Heroes 3. When you press "Play" nothing happens. It doesn't
matter which game exe i choose to run.
Running from terminal reveals that "_hd3_.dll" fails to initialize, preventing
game from starting.
This problem affects versions 9.6 - 9.9. Version 9.5 is the latest version that
works.
OS: Debian 12.5
Desktop environment: KDE Plasma
Window system: X11
